Shigella flexneri inhibition by acetic acid.
The degree of Shigella flexneri inhibition by acetic acid in a chemically defined medium was dependent upon the concentration of undissociated acetic acid in the medium. Under the conditions of the experiments, the critical concentration of undissociated acetic acid that completely inhibited S. flexneri multiplication was approximately 0.0018 M. Adjustment of the medium from pH 6.0 to 7.0 after...
متن کاملVirulent Shigella flexneri causes damage to mitochondria and triggers necrosis in infected human monocyte-derived macrophages.
Shigella flexneri is a gram-negative bacterium that causes bacillary dysentery in humans that is characterized by an acute inflammatory response of the colon. The fate of phagocytes that are infected in vitro with virulent Shigella has been the subject of some investigation and debate. In this study we found that virulent Shigella caused a rapid increase in the cell membrane permeability of inf...
متن کاملMolecular characterization of plasmids from virulent and spontaneously occurring avirulent colonial variants of Shigella flexneri.
Spontaneous transition of Shigella flexneri from T- to O-type colonies with concomitant loss of virulence dose not appear to be accompanied by a change in any of the four plasmic species found in the virulent parent.
متن کاملVirulent Shigella flexneri subverts the host innate immune response through manipulation of antimicrobial peptide gene expression
Antimicrobial factors are efficient defense components of the innate immunity, playing a crucial role in the intestinal homeostasis and protection against pathogens. In this study, we report that upon infection of polarized human intestinal cells in vitro, virulent Shigella flexneri suppress transcription of several genes encoding antimicrobial cationic peptides, particularly the human beta-def...
متن کاملKeratitis due to Shigella flexneri.
Multiresistant Shigella flexneri isolates were cultured from the cornea and stool of a girl. Genetic analysis showed the isolates were identical. Shigella spp. are rare causes of ulcerative keratitis; there have only been 14 published cases since 1943. Although prognosis after local treatment is good, shigellosis is a systemic infection, possibly leading to dehydration.
